(Overdue) Update: Bibles for Kids

In May of 2012, we started a fundraiser. Our goal was to raise $5,000 so we could buy about 500 Bibles to give to kids involved in our ministry. The response was overwhelming and we ended up raising $11,460 – over double what we had hoped for! Clearly, God wants to get His word into the hands of His people. We dreamed too small and were amazed by the generosity of the body of Christ. As a result, we were able to give Bibles not only to kids, but also to youth and adults.

Last October and November, Chase worked with the kids’ director Yeril and youth director Ileana to make a series of lessons about what the Bible is and how to use it. Yeril taught this series over several weeks in the kids’ program, and Ileana taught it in her small groups for youth. People who participated regularly received a Bible (pictured above). We make sure to incorporate actually using the Bible into our programs as well.
Soon after, we created a system in our kids’ services that is somewhat similar to the AWANA store. Our kids are able to earn (fake) money for various things like bringing a friend to church, bringing their Bible to church, remembering the lessons, memorizing verses, etc. With their money they are able to purchase items from the store, which we open once a month. These items include things like toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, toys, games, balls, and school supplies. We also have the Bibles available in the store. We love to watch the kids save up their money over several weeks to buy the bigger items. We hope they are learning the important lessons of how to earn and save money.
Other ways that people have been able to receive the Bibles are through our NiƱos de Vida small groups ( a new outreach program to kids), after our Tuesday discipleship classes, and through our Nuevete youth group. We are so thankful to everyone involved in this fundraiser – whether it was by donating financially or by praying that God would provide. He did and we are loving the opportunity to share God’s word with so many different people.
Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105
